Shelter Cove Invasive Plant Program: Earth Day 2018 Volunteer Project & Celebration

Shelter Cove Invasive Plant Program: Earth Day 2018 Volunteer Project & Celebration

Invasive plant species are having a negative impact along the California Coast and tend to flourish in disturbed areas where they compete with native plants for space, sun, nutrients, and water. When native plant communities are taken over by invasive plants, it becomes difficult for native ecosystems to function, food webs begin to break down, natural histories change and more complex problems begin to arise. Join the Bureau of Land Management on Sunday, April 22nd for an Earth Day Clean up of invasive species.
Gear required: gloves, tools, closed-toed shoes, long sleeve shirts, rain gear if needed (project rain or shine), re-fillable water bottles, hat, sunscreen. BLM and LCIA are providing gloves and tools. Lunch for volunteers is provided (Smoked Tri-tip sandwiches and sides, vegetarian sandwiches available). Desserts and Drinks for sale to support non-profit groups. Kids are encouraged to come help with their parents only–so supervised youth are welcome. At the Earth Day Celebration we will have art projects for all ages of kids and SCARF will be leading softball games in the adjacent field.  Earth Day Poster contest for local schools 4/2 through 4/20–winners will be announced at Earth Day celebration on 4/22. Prizes!
